shake it off

This quote does things for me. I have loved it from the first time I saw it. It's interesting, intriquing, and it gets you thinking; those are the best kinds of quotes in my opinion. Oh how I wish I were like trees in winter, you know, an expert at letting things go. Try as I might, I'm just not there yet. I haven't quite figured it out. You see, letting things go is not my forte. It's hard for me to to just accept that some things aren't meant to be and to just let it go. I know I'm not the only one who holds on to something for dear life. Eventually I realize that said thing isn't good for me, but boy do I wish I would realize it sooner.

There are a lot of things in our lives that we could be holding on to but really need to move on and let it go. It could be our past, our mistakes, or something that's holding us back from out future. It could be a person who is really no good for you (we've all been there right), but you just can't seem to get them out of your head. Or it could be the hurt, the pain, or the wrong that a person has done to you. It's hard to let that go. Whatever the situation may be, holding on to something is stressful. Let me tell you.  As hard as it may be, life is all about knowing when to hold on but most importantly knowing when to let go. I think the letting go is what makes us strong.

Like I said, I'm no expert at this. I'm still figuring things out. Am I still holding on to some things right now? Yeah I am. There are some things (and some people) that I'm still holding on to. Also, some hurt and some pain. I'm still trying to find my way and sometimes it's easier said than done, but I'm getting there. I know in my head that certain things and people aren't meant to be, I'm just trying to get my heart to catch up.

Weekly Roundup

This week on the blog was pretty light. Only two posts went up due to my moving situation and my lack of internet access. Not having internet access was hard, and I was totally having blogging withdrawals. I will say that it kind of felt good to take a little break, but I'm beyond happy to be back. I still have no computer, it crashed on me, but I hope to have it back in the coming week. So this post is again without links. Without further ado, here's this week's short roundup. As always, make sure to check out any post you may have missed and I'll see you back here tomorrow with an all new post.
Thanks for reading and have an amazing day!

Neon Stripes

I love a basic t-shirt that has a little something going on. This shirt is exactly that. The neon stripes give this basic tee something extra and keep it from looking too basic. This is perfect for me since I love a good t-shirt. This look is pretty casual, but this is what you'll find me in while going to class. I'm a busy college student after all. I love having pieces in my wardrobe that are comfy, but still look like I didn't just roll out of bed. I'm all about that.

What I'm wearing:
Forever 21 shirt
jeans from a local boutique
Payless flats
Dooney and Bourke purse

the un-basic basics

It's always important to have a few basics in your wardrobe. Personally, I love throwing on a basic top and shorts when dressing up is not an option. Basics can be either dressed up or down. They are so versatile and make for easy, comfortable dressing. In this case, I loved pairing two basic pieces with a chic hairstyle and ankle strap sandals. It makes this basic look a little un-basic. And sometimes that can be a good thing. A very good thing.

What I'm wearing:
Wal-Mart shirt
shorts that were once jeans
Target shoes
Dooney and Bourke purse

Have a great day and thanks for reading!

Weekly Roundup

This weeks roundup is coming to you a day early and it's going to be a little different. Shall I explain? First, my computer crashed on me. Great, I know. It's still being fixed so creating blog posts has been a little difficult to say the least. Second, I'm moving today. If you follow me on twitter or Instagram (if you aren't, then you totally should) you'll know that I planned to move on Wednesday but things got moved around to today. That being said, I won't have internet access today or even tomorrow, maybe not until Monday. So things will be a little slow around here, but I promise it will go back to normal soon. I wanted to go ahead and post this weeks roundup (without links) in case you missed something. Be sure to check out anything you may have missed and I'll be sure to update you all when things get back to normal (which I hope is soon). Look out for my next post and I'll see you all when I get back. Have a great weekend and thanks for reading!

Denim skirting the issue

Can I be honest for a second? Since I'm back in college, I really only have time to dress up on the weekends and I'm lucky if I feel like it then. So today's outfit is true weekend attire. I just like to throw on something comfy and call it a day. I will say that I am loving the chiffon detailing on the sleeves and the back of this shirt. It really takes a simple look up a notch and gives it a little something extra. I'm also glad I got some wear out of this denim skirt. I've had it for years. What do you feel most comfortable in on the weekend?

What I'm wearing:
Target shirt
JCPenney skirt (Hint)
Soda sandals
Coach purse

Fall Trends: Love 'em or Leave 'em?

Photo

I'm not a big trend follower. I never have been. Sometimes trends spotted on the runway are so hard to translate into real life. I see some things on the runway that I would never wear because it simply doesn't function for me. That being said, having style is all about how you interpret trends and what's on the runway. Making it work for you and your life. There are some major fall trends going on right now. Some are good and others for me are bad. Today I'm going to share a few of them with you and tell you if I love 'em or if they should just stay on the runway.

1. Turtleneck
Call me crazy (or not) but I love me a good turtleneck. They make for great layering pieces and I'm so glad they're making a comeback. There are so many different ways to style them, which make them a perfect transition piece. So what's the verdict on turtlenecks? Love 'em.

2. Thigh high
I think thigh high boots look great on other people and they look so good in the photo above. This woman looks so chic and put together and those boots are fierce. But for me and my lifestyle, thigh high boots are not really an option. They're something I just don't see myself wearing. The verdict: Leave 'em.

3. White after Labor Day
White is one of my favorite colors. So when I saw that white was a big trend for fall, I was all about it. There's something about it that's so clean, modern, and chic. It's pretty much perfect in my book. Again, this trend is versatile and I think anyone can make it work in real life. The verdict on this white after Labor Day trend: Love 'em.

4. Mad about Plaid
I'm not really a fan of plaid. I know that there are ways of making this pattern look really chic and pretty (like the photo above), but it still doesn't sit well with me. I'm just not crazy about the print. I've seen people wear it and it looks amazing on them, but this trend has got to go. Verdict: Leave 'em.

5. Make a Statement
It's pretty much a given that just about any trend that deals with jewelry I'm all about. A statement necklace is an instant way to glam up any look. You throw on a basic tee, blazer, and jeans with an amazing statement necklace and you're set. And can we talk about the necklace pictured above? All kinds of amazing. Statement necklaces: love 'em.

6. Velvet Crush
Velvet, velvet, velvet. I really want to love you. The blazer pictured above really makes me want to love you. You look so good in blazer form and that color? Forget about it. So pretty and so chic, but so not JaToya. As pretty as velvet can be, for me, I'll probably never wear it. So, sorry velvet. You're one trend that I'm just going to have to leave.

7. Classic Print
Black, check. White, check. Print, check. Really what's not to love about houndstooth. It has three of my favorite things all rolled up in one. I also really love it in sweater form (pictured above), but there are so many ways to incorporate this print into your wardrobe. Houndstooth definitely gets an okay from me.

8. Back to School
Let me start of by saying that I am completely obsessed with this look pictured above. I love the femininity of the skirt paired with the sportiness of the varsity jacket. I love the whole thing. I've never really been a big fan of varsity jackets, but this look is making me think twice. As much as I love it though, I don't see myself wearing a look like this in my day to day life. So as much as it pains me to say this, I think I'm going to have to pass on wearing this trend.

9. Cap It Off
Love cap toe shoes. Absolutely love them. They're easy to style, easy to wear, and look good with just about anything. Cap toe shoes: love 'em.

10. Stripe It Up
I don't use the word hate often. I actually hate using the word hate, but I hate striped pants. I know it's harsh, but on me, they just don't look flattering at all. I'm definitely going to leave striped pants where they're at.

11. Block Party
Color bloking is an instant way to add interest to an outfit. I love this black and white crossbody (again two of my favorite colors). It's an easy way to wear the trend, without being too over the top. Especially if you're not a fan of color blocking really bold colors. This bag is so simple but chic at the same time. Color blocking? Love it, duh!

Those are just a few of the fall trends that caught my eye. Of course there are more, but I think these will do for now. Now I want to know, what are some fall trends that you love and what are some that you want to leave?

Lace + Ocean Hues

Captured having a laughing attack. Classy

The look and feel of this outfit is exactly what I needed on a slightly overcast day. I love being dressed up when the weather is a little cloudy. For some reason, it makes me feel a little better. This lace shirt is really dressing up a simple cotton skirt. Perfect for an overcast day!
